An open transom window in the winter helped heat from the central fireplace reach bedrooms at night. The pattern or design of the muntins for the transom usually does not align with the muntin bars or stiles of the doors below. Our transoms are single pane 1 4 annealed glass with simulated divided lite with 1 3 16 muntin bars. Door transoms can be used on interior doors and these are mainly ornamental in nature.

For single doors simply order a transom sash that is the same width as the door slab that will go underneath. We have done interior transoms in our homes. A transom over a double door better visually connects the two rooms and shares light between the two. This is normal there is no need to align them.

Operable transoms have sashes that can be opened or closed to help regulate the temperature in a room when the door is closed. Wood transoms provide beautiful detail to interior doors. Standard installation we do not make doors but you can choose most any door that you can find and we will build an exterior transom to fit above it. We then use divided light grids on the transoms and have them match the exterior windows.

Eventually transom windows earned a dominant role in households not just above exterior doors but within the interior space of a home as well. We would strongly recommend going with the transom. Typically non operating and used to add style and increase natural light transoms span the width of the opening they top and can be placed above single or double doors and sidelites. The windows are generally rectangular and placed horizontally and may be sectioned with trim. Transoms separate doors from windows above the door and allow extra light to enter your home when they are placed above exterior windows. Interior trim will match the door unit.
